🌴The Grand Tiki 🌴

Digital Handbook

Please read this entire page carefully — it contains important steps required for your check-in.  This is a boat stay — please follow the steps below to ensure a smooth arrival.

  • The Wi-Fi is provided through Verizon cellular service. While it does have unlimited data service, speeds can vary.
  • To make sure all guests have access to decent internet speeds, please disconnect when you are not actively watching or using the internet. Streaming video uses massive amounts of data.
  • Please be courteous and save some for the next guest!
  • There is a hammock in the closet that can be hung between the posts on the porch.
  • If any gear is still wet, do not put it away. Leave it out on the porch to dry, including paddles, snorkel masks, and similar equipment.
  • To open and close the television case, use the “TV” switch located on the side of the headboard by the bathroom.
  • The Blu-Ray player is located at the foot of the bedside, on the same side as the bathroom.
  • Be sure to turn off the television before closing the case.
  • Key West has only one broadcast channel, and it is a tourism advertising channel.
  • If you are more tech-savvy, you can connect your device to the television using the casting options.

To use the air conditioner/heater:

  1. Make sure the generator is running.

  2. Take the remote mounted on the wall and point it at the air conditioner mounted on the back wall near the ceiling.

You will know the air conditioner recognized the button you pressed when you hear it beep. If it does not beep, it did not recognize the signal and you will need to try again.

When the unit beeps, it has received whatever setting is displayed on the remote control screen at that button press.

  3. Press the Power button on the remote.

The air conditioner should now display the temperature it is set to, not the current temperature of the air. If there is still no display on the air conditioner, try again.

  4. The remote control display should show a snowflake icon at the top of the screen.

If it does not, press the Mode button repeatedly until the snowflake appears.

If you do not feel cool air after approximately 10 minutes, use the remote again to cycle through the modes to make sure the air conditioner received the correct command.

  5. You can press Turbo to run the fan at maximum speed.

  6. You can press the < > Swing button to control the sideways oscillation of the airflow for more even cooling. This will display a horizontal bar on the remote control screen.

Avoid pressing the up/down Swing button. This displays a vertical bar on the remote screen and reduces cooling efficiency by blowing air into the utility compartment above the closet.

The unit is extremely quiet, so you cannot necessarily tell if it is working simply by listening for the sound of the fan blowing.

Please return the remote

Please put the remote back in its holder as soon as you are finished with it so it does not get lost.

The remote is the only way to control the air conditioner.

Important: Keep doors and windows closed

DO NOT RUN THE AIR CONDITIONER WITH THE DOORS OR WINDOWS OPEN.

Excessive condensation will build up on the unit due to the extreme humidity and can cause water damage and possibly cause the air conditioner itself to malfunction.

  • Do not use heavy-wattage devices such as hair dryers, curling irons, etc. in the outlets on the headboard.  They can cause the power inverter to overload and stop working, which will also cause the lights to go out.
  • If such devices must be used, plug them into the coffee maker power outlet and run the generator.

The higher-wattage electrical devices on the boat, such as the air conditioner/heater, hot water tank, and coffee maker receptacle, are powered directly by the generator.

Starting the generator

The generator switch is located on the side of the bed headboard.

    • Press Start to start the generator.
    • The generator will begin producing electricity after a few seconds.
    • Press Stop to shut the generator off.
  • Lower-wattage electrical devices, including the lights, headboard receptacles, water pump, toilet, and television, are powered by a battery bank.
  • When the battery voltage gets too low, the generator will automatically start to charge the batteries. It will shut down once they are fully charged.
  • This process may take a few hours, and the generator cannot be manually turned off until charging is complete.
  • The light switches are located on the wall in the kitchen area.
  • Most of the switches are dimmers. If a light seems like it is not working, make sure it has not been dimmed all the way down.
  • The closet light turns off automatically when the door is shut.
  • The underwater light has a mechanical arm that raises and lowers it.
  • After pressing the On/Off button, the green POWER indicator light will illuminate to show that it is in operating mode. It will take several seconds for the arm to complete its extension process. During this time, the underwater light will not be illuminated.
  • Once the arm is properly engaged, the underwater light will illuminate automatically.
  • Important: Make sure the paddleboards are not slid underneath the porch before attempting to turn on the underwater light. Otherwise, the arm can get stuck on them and fail to work.

If the underwater light gets stuck

If this or a similar problem occurs, the red FAULT light on the switch panel will illuminate.

  • Press the Power button once to try to reverse the motion.
  • If successful, the red light will turn off.
  • Remove the paddleboard or other obstruction.
  • Try the On/Off button again.
  • The underwater light operates for a maximum of 2 hours before automatically turning itself off. You can turn it back on again if you choose.
  • Cell phones, laptops, CPAP machines, and other low-wattage devices can be plugged into the power outlets on the bed headboard.
  • All safety equipment is stored inside the sink cabinet.
  • The life jackets and throwable device stored there are only to be used in the event of an emergency or as required by law, not for swimming.
  • The life jackets in the closet are for use with the paddle boards.

To use the hot water tank:

  1. Start the generator.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press the “Hot Water” switch located beside the generator switch.

There is also a secondary timer switch that can be used in the closet.

It will take at least 5 minutes to make enough hot water for a quick shower.

After 15 minutes, the heater will automatically shut off. Unused hot water will stay warm for about 30 minutes after that.

During the hot water tank’s 15-minute heating period, the battery charger and coffee maker receptacle are temporarily disconnected to prevent overloading the generator.

The water tank is very small and will cool off quickly as you use the hot water and the tank is refilled with cold water.

You have approximately 30 gallons of water on board, which roughly translates to about 10 minutes of consecutive usage.

Please use water conservation techniques, such as:

  • Turning off the water while lathering.
  • Turning off the water while brushing your teeth.

You can view the water level on the gauge located in the closet.

  • Fresh water and fuel for the generator are refilled once each day between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
  • This process takes place entirely outside and we will not enter the interior of the vessel.
  • However, it is necessary to board the front deck to complete the work.
  • Don’t worry if a storm blows in. The Tiki Suite is built solid, anchored securely, and has handled many storms, so you will be safe inside.
  • In the event of rain, and whenever you leave to go somewhere or check out, be sure to close both windows and all the doors.
  • The boat will normally change the direction it is facing throughout the day based on the changing currents.
  • Do not be alarmed if you are not facing the same direction you were an hour or two ago.
  • Watch out for other boaters driving by, especially the jet ski tourists.
  • If you are in the water, make sure they can see you so they do not accidentally hit you.
  • Do not touch anything underwater that is RED or ORANGE. It will likely sting or burn you.
  • Stay away from Man-of-War jellyfish and lionfish.
  • Do not walk around on the sea floor. It has urchins, stingrays, and other marine life that may hurt you if you step on them.
